Tortuga Escondida proudly hosts the Akumal International Artists Residency (AIAR). We welcome artists from around the world to spend time creating, exchanging, enjoying the magic of beautiful Quintana Roo.

Every residency session one artist will be awarded a fellowship to Tortuga Escondida. The artist will be fully subsidized for The Akumal International Artists Residency. In exchange, fellows create a project that specifically engages with and ideally enhances Akumal.

A rotating selection of professional artists is invited each session to jury the fellowship open call.

Fellowship Guidelines

Fellowship artists can be of any age and working in any medium, including visual and performing arts, as well as written word and experimental media.

Artists must have a specific, project in mind. A proposal with the concept, budget, and process must be submitted. Although we understand being in a specific and new environment influences work and processes, we ask for as thorough a pitch as possible. An ideal project includes site specific work, community engagement, and results in a public piece that remains in Akumal, at Tortuga Escondida and/or Akumal Pueblo, and/or elsewhere in the area.

Fellowship artists are asked to participate in the residency (work in the studios, partake in salons, events, etc) and exhibit their completed project at the end of the session.

Upon acceptance, artists will be given a full subsidy for one residency session.

The Residency happens October 23rd - November 20th, in 2018!

Tortuga Escondida is nestled in the Jungle; a hidden hacienda, green and tranquil. The center’s large living quarters are equipped with an industrial sized kitchen, rooftop chill space and a 30’ pool. We have a ceramics kiln on site and are open to site specific works on our grounds. Did we mention it's 15 minutes to the beach?

Artists are provided with a private room (option to share) that includes ample studio space. Additionally, there are shared studio space which are outdoors/screened in. We feel this offers the best of both worlds; giving people a chance to be social or solitary.
