Tortuga Escondida is a place for making art, exchanging ideas, and connecting to nature, to others, to ourselves.

OPEN CALL

deadline August 1, 2018

Tortuga Escondida  proudly hosts the Akumal International Artists Residency (AIAR). We welcome emerging and established artists of all mediums to spend time creating, exchanging, enjoying the magic of beautiful Tulum.

Over the course of four weeks, visiting artists immerse in the Caribbean environment dedicating the time to their practice, ideally with emphasis on a specific project or goal.

The program is set up to engage with the community of Akumal through workshops, open studios, and other events. A final public exhibition concludes the residency, where participants share what they’ve created.

The residency overlaps our first annual Festival de Artes, so that resident artists automatically have an opportunity to participate.

Our artists come from all over the world, across multiple disciplines. We love having performing artists, writers, and experimental artists as much as we do visual ones!

El Festival de Artes Akumal is an annual event held in Akumal Pueblo, with satellite venues at Akumal Playa and Tortuga Escondida. A weekend of art, making, food, drink, and good company, the Festival de Artes is an explosion of creativity and good will.

The goal is to bring a fiesta of art to Akumal Pueblo, to enhance and beautify the town for the local people as well as visitors. Murals, site specific works, performances, and even interactive media are on the menu.

Tortuga Escondida is dedicated to coordinating space for public works, workshops, exhibitions, and performance. Artists are invited from within and without Mexico to make something for and with the people, while enjoying the beautiful area.

The fiesta overlaps our arts residency, so that resident artists automatically have an opportunity to participate.

If you are interested in participating/have a great idea, let us know!
